Numbers were thin, but the talent was mighty when Rocket freshman basketball coach John Lucas started the 2009-10 season.
With only 9 girls on the team and 3 with no previous basketball experience the girls concluded a dream season. In SBC play they fashioned an 8-1 league and tournament record. Overall they were 9 wins against 10 losses, with that being a bit deceiving playing some other well respected freshman programs and junior varsity teams throughout the area. Teams like Bellevue, Notre Dame academy and Put-in-Bay were on the schedule.
Continued improvement night in night out kept the lady Rockets very competitive.
In the championship game, a 25-24 victory over Edison, Abby Gezo tossed in 11 points to lead the ladies. Sierra Martinez would add 8 points. Point guard Erin Bryant did an excellent job running the offense and keeping all the teammates involved.
Several things that coach Lucas enjoyed this season included their smartness, hard work, and all the parents' dedication. Making the season very enjoyable and fun for him. Congratulations young ladies and continued success in your higher levels of high school academics and athletics!
