Local History Room and Museum
Center is a treasure from the past

The Oak Harbor Public Library is often the place you go to check out books, movies, use the computers or possibly use some of the many resources available. However, what you may not know is that there is a Local History Room & Museum Center on the lower level.
In 2008 the library did a renovation. Part of this entailed the lower level. What was once storage is now an elegant place to browse and research Oak Harbor's history.
When you first walk into the room, you will notice the circulation desk and chair. They were used in the old library until 1987. In the center of the room you will see the wood table and chairs from 1940 that were also used in the old library reference room. All of the bookcases are from 1956 and are from the Juniors Women's Club.
Enclosed in glass are many interesting artifacts including, photos, glass, plates, baby shoes, and a grocery account book from Amos Fought Grocery.
Other interesting artifacts include a I.O.O.F. bass drum from Oak Harbor Schools dated 1900, Kramb Company egg carrier 1900 and a photo album that contains over 140 photos and descriptions of Oak Harbor. There are plenty of books to browse through as well.
You will find many items relating to the natural and cultural history of the Village of Oak Harbor, Salem Township, Carroll Township, Benton Township and the BCS School District.
John Liske has been working as a volunteer in the Museum Center every Thursday since last June. He oversees the inventory, and accession system. If he is available he will guide you through the museum and answer any questions you may have. He is usually at the museum from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. You can also call the library at 419-898-7001 and make an appointment with him if you need help with local history research.
The Museum Center is always seeking donations to add to the history and culture. The Acquisition Committee approves all donations before they are accepted.. Some items include: printed material, artifacts, and objects of art. All materials and artifacts accepted by the Acquisition Committee will become the property of the Oak Harbor Public Library.
Monetary donations are always accepted. Director of the Library, Lina Hall said, " The donations would help offset the cost for more display cases."
Due to the historical collections in the Local History Room & Museum Center, the room is lock when not in use. Please ask library staff for access.
Visitors under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.
Make sure you stop by and experience this wonderful display. If you think about it, you might just have something in your attic that you could share with generations to come.
